DIY: Summer Hairstyles for All to Share!

Ah, summer honeymoon! Basking in the blazing sun, daily beach trips and tousled summer waves in your hair are all you want. Of course it’s easier said than done when you live on an island (I swear I’m not bragging). Whether you’re planning an island destination wedding or not you can easily get these casual summer hairstyles yourself, no matter your hair type. Straight, curly, or textured, we’ve whipped up quick tips with the help of our RedLane Spa hair experts, to get the perfect “straight from the salt water” look (think Kate Hudson, Amel Larriux and Jill Scott).

For Straight Hair

Step 1:  After washing and conditioning hair dry your hair.
Step 2:  Loosely braid your hair all over. Braid smaller sections for tighter waves and bigger sections for larger waves. You can try two braids on each side, one on top and one at the back of your head for loose waves.
Step 3:  Secure each end of each braid with a small elastic band.
Step 4:  Leave braids to set overnight or for as long as you can hold them, however overnight will work fine.
Step 5:  Before you loose your braids, curl each braid around a medium barrel curling iron for a bit then unravel.
Step 6:  Spray a bit of holding hair spray* all over your hair for extra hold and then scrunch and shake your waves for more body.  Enjoy!

For Afro-Textured Hair (These tips work well for women with dreadlocks or fine braids as well.)

Step 1:  After washing and conditioning hair, dry your hair to the point of it being damp. Do not fully dry your hair but do not leave it soaking wet either.
Step 2:  Section off a small part of your hair to braid; smaller for tighter waves, bigger of more loose ones.
Step 3:  Rub from the root to the tip of your sectioned off hair, a bit of holding gel, mousse or product of your choice. If you have an afro use mousse or gel and a wide tooth comb to detangle your hair before the next step.*
Step 4:  Start your braid as close to the root as possible and braid straight down to the very end.  You may want to secure the end of your braid with a small elastic band. If you have fine braids or dreadlocks, take about three or four locks/braids to braid together for smaller waves. Use about 6 or 7 locks/braids to plait together for bigger waves.

Step 5:  Allow braids to set. For faster waves you may want to sit under a hooded dryer until hair is completely dry. For longer holding waves leave braids in for more than one day. Before loosening braids from hair ensure that your hair is completely dry! If your hair is still damp after loosening a test braid, allow hair to dry first. If your hair is damp your waves will not hold.

Step 6:  Loose braids from hair, spray entire head with a holding spray of your choice and voilà, lovely beach waves!

For Curly Hair

Step 1:  After washing and conditioning hair, dry your hair to the point of it being damp. Do not fully dry your hair but do not leave it soaking wet either.
Step 2:  Using your favorite anti-frizz mousse or gel and apply to your hair in sections to ensure you cover your entire head.  Using a wide tooth comb, gently comb through your curls to make them less tight and tangled.
Step 3:  Make a center part in your hair from front to back sectioning off your hair into two equal sections.  Braid each section into two parts and make two tight ponytails.

Step 4:  Twist and wrap each ponytail into two tight buns.
Step 5:  With your hair in the buns, blows dry your hair until it is partially dry. Keep the blow drier constantly in the center shaking it from side to side. (Don’t worry; it won’t burn your scalp.)

Step 6:  Loosen hair from buns after your hair is completely dry. The longer you leave your buns in the longer your waves will last. (Luckily your buns are cute enough to rock while you’re out and about!)
Step 7:  Using your fingers, gently finger comb your loose waves to arrange them the way you want. Do not use a comb or brush. Finish off with an anti-frizz, holding spray and you’re ready to hit the town (or island!).

Red Lane Spa Stylist Says– “Use Paul Mitchell’s Foaming Pomade and The Cream ®  while your hair is damp and before you start your braids for hold without stiffness. Finish off your relaxed wavy look with Paul Mitchell’s Extra-Body Firm Finishing Spray ® to fight the dreaded frizz but still leave your waves light and shiny. “
